I Put It in the Recycling Bin. Now What?
Recycling is one of those things I've been doing for so long that I never really questioned what happened after I did it. You finish a drink, check for the recycling symbol, put the bottle in the right bin, and that's pretty much the end of your involvement. Except obviously, the bottle doesn't magically recycle itself.
I got curious about what actually happens next, and it turns out the process is much more complicated than I assumed. It also depends a lot on where you live, because recycling systems aren't universal. Different cities accept different materials and have different facilities for processing them.
In many places, household recyclables are collected and taken to a materials recovery facility, usually called an MRF. This is where a pretty chaotic pile of cardboard, cans, bottles, paper and containers has to somehow be separated back into useful materials.
Some of the sorting is surprisingly high-tech. Conveyor belts move everything through the facility while different machines separate materials based on their properties. Magnets can pull out steel. Other equipment can separate aluminum. Optical sorters use sensors to identify certain types of plastic and direct them into different streams. There are usually people involved in sorting and quality control too, especially when something ends up there that shouldn't have.
And apparently, we put a lot of things in recycling bins that shouldn't be there. Plastic bags can get tangled in sorting equipment. Food residue can contaminate materials. Things made from several materials stuck together can be difficult to separate. Even putting something in the bin because it seems recyclable can cause problems. There's actually a name for that: "wishcycling." You're basically hoping the recycling facility will figure it out.
Once the usable materials are separated, they're usually compressed into large bales and sold to companies that can process them into raw materials again. Aluminum might eventually become another can. Paper can become new paper products. Certain plastics can be cleaned, shredded and processed into pellets that manufacturers use to make something new.
The important word there is can. Putting something into a recycling bin doesn't guarantee it gets another life. Whether it does depends on what the material is, whether it's contaminated, what the local facility can process, and whether there's actually a market for the recovered material.
Learning this hasn't made me think recycling doesn't work. If anything, it's made me realize why doing it correctly matters. I've also stopped thinking of the recycling symbol as the end of the story. It's really just the beginning of a surprisingly complicated journey involving trucks, people, machines, businesses and a lot of decisions that most of us never see.
All triggered because someone stood in front of two bins for three seconds and picked one.
